Nanobodies are single domain antibodies derived from camelids, which will enable analysis of complex macromolecules and small proteins. They are a versatile tools which have multiple applications in biomedical sciences due to their small molecular size, high affinity and high stability.
The use of nanobodies in structural biology has allowed analysis of complex macromolecules, including integral membrane proteins, using both X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM imaging. One application is the use of nanobodies as scaffolds to increase the size of proteins which are typically too small to image using cryo-EM. The Franklin aims to develop high throughput nanobody technologies – reducing the cost and increasing access to nanobodies for the UK community.
