Dr Gwyndaf Evans

Head of Technology

Gwyndaf Evans was awarded his PhD in Physics from the University of Warwick in 1994 for his work performed at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Hamburg on the application of anomalous scattering in macromolecular crystallography using synchrotron radiation. After Post-Doctoral positions at the Advance Photon Source in Chicago, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Global Phasing Ltd in Cambridge, UK., he joined Diamond Light Source on the Harwell Campus in 2004. In 2020 he joined the Franklin as Head of Technology and holds a joint position with Diamond Light Source as Deputy Director of Life Sciences.

At Diamond he has been responsible for the construction of two X-ray beamlines for macromolecular crystallography, the microfocus beamline I24 and more recently the VMXm nanofocus diffraction beamline that has incorporated novel X-ray focusing methods, SEM imaging methods into an in-vacuum sample environment. He leads the DIALS (Diffraction Analysis for Advanced Light Sources) software project that provides a unified framework for X-ray and electron diffraction data analysis.

Dr Evans is a world leading expert in the use of synchrotron radiation in structural biology and has research groups developing methods in X-ray and electron diffraction/imaging at the interface of measurement and analysis.
