UK Ambassador to the EU visits the Rosalind Franklin Institute
The UK’s Ambassador to the EU, Ambassador Lindsay Appleby, visited Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, including the Rosalind Franklin Institute, on Tuesday (7th October). The visit was part of an ongoing initiative to drive economic growth as part of the Government’s Plan for Change.

This is part of a series of visits launched earlier in the year to encourage Ambassadors and High Commissioners to meet with regional businesses in order to build connections between local communities and international growth-driving markets, spotting opportunities for British businesses whilst posted in other countries.
“I was thrilled to be in Oxfordshire to meet with local leaders to discuss how I can help to drive overseas investment into the area and help local businesses with export opportunities.”
Ambassador Appleby had discussions about Oxfordshire’s thriving science and technology offer at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus and The Oxford Science Park. Harwell Science and Innovation Campus alone is home to over 7000 researchers, academics and scientists, 200+ companies and organisations, and 16 of the UK’s National Laboratories and Research Institutes, including the Franklin.
The visit to the Franklin was led by Chief Operating Officer Mark Driver and Director of Strategic Marketing Laura Holland, who welcomed the Ambassador and his delegation.

Whilst at the Franklin, the delegation met with Professor Ray Owens discussing our role in Instruct-ERIC, a pan-European distributed research infrastructure that makes high-end technologies and methods in structural biology available to users.
The team also visited the Franklin’s world-leading imaging suites exploring our development of microscopy techniques in partnership with global manufacturers Themo Fisher Scientific.

“We were honoured to welcome the UK’s Ambassador to the EU at the Franklin. This visit allowed us to showcase the strength of our collaborations with our European partners, and how our new strategy will open the doors to more collaborations across Europe in the future.”
