Dr Julian Pietsch
Postdoctoral Research Associate
About
Julian is currently developing high-performance quantitative image processing methods to investigate cell-cell interfaces in the group of Dr Karina Pombo-Garcia. He aims to pair deep learning with custom microscopy workflows to take super-resolution STED imaging to the next level.
Julian completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide, Australia investigating a stochastic bistable gene network. Then in Peter Swain’s group at the University of Edinburgh and Victor Sourjik’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology, he investigated regulatory dynamics in yeast and bacteria using quantitative imaging and microfluidics. He is best known for developing the ‘BABY’ algorithm to segment and track asymmetrically dividing cells.
