About
Dr Mohamed Amir Alaa Belmekki is a Research Associate in Ptychographic Algorithm Development at the Rosalind Franklin Institute. His research focuses on computational imaging, statistical signal processing, and inverse problems, with particular emphasis on developing efficient methods for extracting reliable information from noisy, high-dimensional, and measurement-limited data.
At the Rosalind Franklin Institute, he develops mathematical models and computational algorithms to improve the acquisition and reconstruction of low-dose four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) data from biological specimens. His work focuses on efficient solutions to ptychographic inverse problems, including phase retrieval, statistical reconstruction and regularisation, alongside the optimisation of scanning strategies to enable more informative data acquisition under limited electron dose.
He obtained his PhD in Computational Imaging and Statistical Image Processing from Heriot-Watt University in 2023, following an MSc in Signal and Communication and an MEng in Electronics from the National Polytechnic School of Algiers, Algeria. His doctoral research focused on Bayesian methods for Single-Photon LiDAR, combining 3D reconstruction, multispectral classification and segmentation, and adaptive sampling to improve imaging efficiency under limited photon measurements.
Before joining the Rosalind Franklin Institute, he held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Liverpool, where he worked on probabilistic target tracking, Radar signal processing and multimodal retinal imaging.
His broader research interests include computational imaging, statistical inverse problems, Bayesian inference, uncertainty-aware reconstruction, and adaptive sensing.
