Dr Amirafshar Moshtaghpour
Dr Amirafshar Moshtaghpour leads the Theory and Algorithmics Platform at the Rosalind Franklin Institute, where he develops theory- and algorithm-driven methods for biological imaging. His research combines mathematics, physics, signal processing, inverse problems, and machine learning to improve how imaging experiments are designed, acquired, and reconstructed, with a particular focus on electron microscopy.
He obtained his MSc in Communication Systems from the University of Tehran and his PhD in Signal and Image Processing from Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Belgium, where his research focused on computational interferometry for hyperspectral imaging. During his PhD, he was a visiting researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. He was awarded an F.R.I.A. fellowship from the F.R.S.-FNRS, and his PhD thesis received the ICTEAM Best Thesis Award in 2020.
Following his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at UCLouvain, developing deep learning methods for image segmentation and human pose estimation. He subsequently joined the Rosalind Franklin Institute as a postdoctoral researcher, based at the Albert Crewe Centre, University of Liverpool, where he developed computational electron microscopy methods for materials science.
His research interests include computational imaging, inverse problems, mathematical modelling, and machine learning. He is also a co-founder of the International Symposium on Computational Sensing.
